Could your headache be coming from your neck?

Headaches can have many different causes, but for some people, pain and stiffness in the neck can contribute to recurring headaches.

You might also notice:
◦ Neck or shoulder tension
◦ Reduced movement or stiffness in your neck
◦ Headaches after long periods at a desk or driving
◦ Pain that starts around the neck or base of the skull
◦ Symptoms that seem to worsen with certain positions or movements

If your headaches appear to be related to your neck, a physiotherapist can assess your movement, strength and posture to help identify what may be contributing.

Treatment will depend on the individual, but may include hands-on therapy, exercises to improve mobility and strength, and practical advice around movement, work or everyday activities.

If headaches and neck tension are becoming a regular part of your week, it may be worth getting them assessed.

Physiotherapy rehab is about more than exercises.

Exercise is often an important part of rehabilitation, but it's only one piece of the picture.

Depending on your injury, condition and goals, your physiotherapist may use a combination of:

◦ Hands-on treatment to help with pain, tension and movement
◦ Advice around activity, pacing and modifying what you're doing
◦ Techniques to improve mobility and function
◦ Strength, balance and movement retraining
◦ Education to help you understand what's happening and manage your recovery
◦ A gradual plan for returning to work, sport or the activities you enjoy

Most importantly, rehabilitation isn't one-size-fits-all. Your physio can adapt your treatment as you progress, working with you towards the things that matter in your everyday life.

At Kumeu Physio, our goal isn't simply to give you exercises – it's to support you through your recovery and help you get back to moving with confidence.

Low back pain is common – but it doesn't have to stop you moving.

Most people will experience low back pain at some point in their lives. It can happen after lifting something awkwardly, spending long hours sitting, working in the garden, or sometimes for no obvious reason at all.

The good news is that, in many cases, staying gently active and getting the right advice can help you recover sooner than prolonged rest.

At Kumeu Physio, we'll assess what's contributing to your back pain and work with you to develop a personalised treatment plan. This may include hands-on treatment, tailored exercises, movement advice and practical strategies to help you return to the activities you enjoy.

If your back has been holding you back, we'd love to help you get moving comfortably again.

🦵 Recovering from a hip or knee replacement?

Joint replacement surgery can be life-changing, helping to reduce pain and improve your quality of life. But rehabilitation plays a big part in achieving the best possible outcome.

Following surgery, physiotherapy can help you:

✅ Restore confidence in walking and everyday activities
✅ Reduce stiffness
✅ Improve balance
✅ Progress your recovery safely at your own pace

Everyone's recovery is different, and your rehabilitation programme should be tailored to your individual goals and stage of healing.

Whether you're preparing for surgery or already on the road to recovery, our experienced physiotherapy team can support you every step of the way.

🍂 Watch your step this winter!🍂

Wet footpaths, slippery decks, muddy tracks and moss-covered paths can all become surprisingly hazardous during winter.

Sometimes all it takes is one unexpected slip to end up with a sprained ankle, sore wrist, bruised shoulder or an aching back.

A few simple precautions can help reduce the risk:
👟 Wear footwear with good grip.
🍃 Take extra care on wet leaves and mossy surfaces.
🚶 Slow down on slippery paths and steps.
🦯 Use handrails where available.

If you do have a fall, don't ignore lingering pain. While many bumps and bruises settle on their own, ongoing pain, swelling or reduced movement may benefit from assessment by a physiotherapist.

Stay safe, enjoy the outdoors, and if you need us, the team at Kumeu Physio is here to help.

Water sports don't stop for winter! The wind might be colder, but our local water sports enthusiasts don't pack their gear away for winter.

Whether you're into surfing, wing foiling, windsurfing, kiteboarding, paddleboarding, sailing, or other water-based activities, your body is working hard every time you head out.

These sports can place significant demands on the:
🌊 Shoulders and upper back
🌊 Neck and upper traps
🌊 Core muscles
🌊 Hips and knees
🌊 Balance and stability systems

Sometimes injuries happen suddenly, but more often we see gradual aches and pains developing from repetitive movements, long sessions on the water, or simply pushing a little harder than usual.

If you're noticing shoulder pain, neck stiffness, lower back discomfort, or an injury that's stopping you from getting out there, physiotherapy can help identify the cause and get you back doing what you love.
