Election Day is fast approaching and don't forget that if you need a lift to the polls, the Community Connector is available to you. The Community Connector is offering free fare -- yes, free -- on Election Day for ADA paratransit and fixed route service.

Election Day is next Tuesday, Nov. 3, and all voting will be done at the Cross Insurance Center, 515 Main St. in Bangor.

It's almost Halloween, and it's spooky out there! What isn't scary? Getting care at Mabel's. Even though things like testing for s*xually transmitted infections (STIs) and navigating contraception options might seem scary because of stigma, they are a normal part of s*xual and reproductive care. You deserve access to essential care like STI testing with providers who center your autonomy, and that's exactly what we're here for.

Who needs STI testing? Anyone who's s*xually active! Most of the time, someone who has an STI doesn't have any symptoms, contrary to what you may have been taught in s*x ed. All STIs are manageable with treatment, and most are curable. There is no shame in contracting an STI--humans are very good at getting sick.

Who needs contraceptive care? Anyone who can get pregnant and doesn't want to (and/or wants some of the other benefits some contraception can provide, like menstruation management). While it's a very good thing that there are so many different options for contraception/birth control to meet different people's needs, it can make finding the right fit overwhelming sometimes. Having a trusted provider to help navigate your options and answer questions can help.

We're in the last few days of early voting here in Maine! While you can no longer register to vote online to vote in the midterm elections on November 3rd, you CAN still register to vote in-person at your local municipality (this is usually the town office or city council--check your municipality's website to see where this is for you). You can vote early in-person through October 29th, this Thursday.

If you requested your absentee ballot and have not yet returned it, drop it off at your municipality's ballot drop box!

By voting early, you plan for life's unexpected complications and guarantee that your voice is heard. This election, like all elections, has important races all up and down the ballot. While races like the US House and Senate get a lot of attention (and a LOT of ads that everyone is tired of seeing), state and town level elections are also important. State legislators, city/town councilors, and school board members all hold positions that greatly impact our communities. Additionally, many towns have other important ballot questions to vote on.

What does it mean when we say that Mabel's is an independent clinic? Well, in our case, we're a clinic so nice we're indie twice!

One way that abortion providers can be independent is that they are their own thing, so not part of a large national organization or a hospital network. Under this definition, Maine has two independent clinics between Mabel Wadsworth Center and our friends at Maine Family Planning.

The other way that clinics can be independent is financially. Clinics that are independent this way neither seek nor receive state or federal government funding, such as the Title X Family Planning Grant (note: this does not include reimbursement for services through Medicaid, Medicare, etc.). The decision to be independent is one that was made intentionally by our founders, who recognized the importance of having at least one clinic in Maine that was independent from government funding. While it can certainly make funding our essential work trickier, it also protects us from having the rug pulled out from under us and allows us to provide honest, compassionate care to our community without interference.

Because Mabel Wadsworth Center is an independent clinic, support from donors is particularly essential. Just as we care for our community, we know that our community cares for us.
