Your bones don't wait until menopause to listen.

In fact, the strongest thing you can do for your skeleton happens in your 30s and 40s β€” well before estrogen starts shifting.

Here's why it matters:
The menopause transition can be a time of faster bone loss, which is why building strong habits earlier matters.

But the bone support you build now? That carries forward.

The basics that support strong bones at every stage:
β†’ Calcium (1,000 mg/day for most women under 50)
β†’ Vitamin D (600-800 IU/day, more if deficient)
β†’ Weight-bearing exercise β€” walking, hiking, dancing, stairs
β†’ Resistance/strength training 2-3x per week
β†’ Limiting alcohol and not smoking

And later? A DEXA scan (bone density test) is typically recommended starting at 65 β€” or earlier if you have risk factors like a family history of osteoporosis, early menopause, or long-term steroid use.

Swipe through for the quick guide. Your future self will thank you.

Meet Maren Dockter, PA-C.

If you have a teenager who's nervous about their first visit to a women's health provider... Maren is exactly who you want in the room.

She specializes in adolescent health β€” and she's passionate about making those early experiences comfortable, empowering, and judgment-free.

What Maren focuses on:

First-time visits for teens. She takes the time to explain everything β€” no rushing, no assumptions. Just real conversation.

Puberty education. From periods to mood changes to body confidence, she meets young women exactly where they are.

Adolescent wellness. Sports physicals, nutrition, mental health check-ins, and HPV vaccination β€” the whole picture, not just one piece.

Maren is part of our all-female team at Balance Medical. And she's one of the reasons families across Bismarck trust us with their daughters' care.

Because a great first experience with healthcare can shape how a young woman advocates for herself for the rest of her life.

May 11 is National Women's Check-Up Day... and if the answer to 'when was your last one?' is 'uhh,' you are absolutely not alone.

Here's the thing about the annual: it's more than a pap.

Your well-woman visit is a full check-in β€” a yearly chance to look at your whole body, not just one system.

At a typical visit we talk through:
β†’ Blood pressure, weight, and baseline labs
β†’ Breast and pelvic exam (when due)
β†’ Pap and HPV screening on the right schedule for your age
β†’ Birth control, fertility, or perimenopause questions
β†’ Mood, sleep, stress β€” yes, this belongs here too
β†’ What screenings you're due for next (mammogram, bone density, colon)

Prevention doesn't feel urgent... until it is. The annual is how we catch the quiet stuff early β€” the kind of stuff you'd never notice on your own.

If it's been more than a year, today is a great day to put one on the calendar. You can message us through the portal and we'll take it from there.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S. β€” and melanoma is the one we most want to catch early.

May is Melanoma & Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and this is a quick reminder that your annual primary care visit is a real place to get a medical skin check. Not a cosmetic consult. A medical one.

What that looks like at Balance Medical:
β†’ A review of any new, changing, or bothersome spots
β†’ A look at moles that have recently itched, bled, or changed shape
β†’ A conversation about your sun history, family history, and skin type
β†’ A referral to a dermatologist for biopsy when something needs a closer look

The simple home framework is ABCDE:
A β€” Asymmetry
B β€” Border (irregular, blurred)
C β€” Color (more than one, uneven)
D β€” Diameter (larger than a pencil eraser)
E β€” Evolving (changing over weeks or months)

If a spot meets any of these β€” don't wait. Bring it up at your next visit, or book one just for that reason.

Catching things early is the whole point.
