When we are in the depths of our struggles it is so important to undo our aloneness and be reminded of our brothers and sisters in Christ who have also struggled and offer their witness to us. They are a powerful source of support and encouragement. Many of them faced the same challenges we do, including mental health struggles and mental illnesses. As we pray for their spiritual support and we meditate on their lives, we are offered hope. Hope that if they can overcome their suffering, we can too. They were human, with all the same flaws and imperfections, yet they became transformed by drawing close to God. May we befriend them on our journey as a vehicle for more intensely experiencing God’s love for us. He longs to be with us in our suffering and the saints can help us open the door to our hearts.

We try to add to the saints featured in this post so please help us out by sharing a saint who has brought you comfort in your struggles or may be a powerful intercessor with others who are struggling.

Feelings are important.

They can tell us that something matters, that we’re hurting, that we’re excited, or that we’re afraid.

But feelings are not instructions.

Wisdom comes from listening to a feeling without letting it make the decision for us.

It comes from being curious about our emotions instead of immediately obeying them.

We don’t have to suppress our feelings, ignore them, or get rid of them.

We can acknowledge them, make space for them, and then choose how we want to respond.

For better or worse, the feedback adults gave us (or didn’t give us) as children affects our self-perception as adults. However, as adults, we can evaluate this feedback and decide how we want to think about ourselves and choose how we speak to ourselves. Therapy can be invaluable in helping us do this.

Has anyone else ever heard this and was confused about what it meant?

Peace is not the same as easy or comfortable. It’s also not always immediate.

Sometimes peace is in choosing the hard things and knowing that even in the discomfort, you’re moving in the direction God is calling you to go.
