MLK Community Healthcare (MLKCH), a private, non-profit, safety-net health system, now offers inpatient, maternity and emergency care at MLK Community Hospital in Willowbrook as well as primary and specialty care at three outpatient sites. In addition, the health system runs a number of community-based health education, screening and treatment programs. MLKCH outpatient services include:

✅ Primar

y care
✅ Pediatrics
✅ Diabetes (endocrinology)
✅ Heart Disease (cardiology)
✅ Lung Disease (pulmonology)
✅ Urology (men’s health)
✅ Mental and behavioral health (psychiatry/social work)
✅ Foot care (podiatry)
✅ Wound care and hyperbaric healing
✅ Infectious disease
✅ Surgery
✅ Addiction medicine

The evolution of MLKCH from hospital to health system is a direct response to South LA’s chronic lack of resources and access to care. The community suffers from a severe shortage of doctors – 1,200 fewer than in average areas – as well as the fewest number of hospital beds in all of LA County.

“Lack of access to quality healthcare made this community vulnerable to Covid,” said Dr. Elaine Batchlor, CEO of MLK Community Healthcare. “South LA has a high burden of diabetes, heart disease, kidney-related illness and other chronic conditions. Our aim is to create the resources and infrastructure necessary to address and reverse poor health.”

Since its opening in 2015, MLKCH has garnered awards and headlines for its innovative approaches to quality, safety and patient satisfaction.

MLKCH clinical staff recently gathered for a powerful one-hour session led by our very own RN Care Manager Ciara Lyons-Ragains, focused on caring for the caregiver while strengthening care for patients.

Through reflective storytelling, small-group discussion and equity-focused tools, participants explored the emotional weight caregivers carry, the importance of “filling your tank,” and how greater awareness of bias can support safer, more compassionate care.

Thank you to Ciara for leading the session and to Employee Wellbeing for hosting.

Measure ER is on the June 2 Los Angeles County ballot.

If approved by voters, Measure ER is projected to provide new funding for safety-net hospitals, community clinics and public health programs across Los Angeles County—including support that could help MLKCH continue sustaining care for our South LA community.

As Election Day approaches, we encourage Los Angeles County voters to make their voices heard.

An official ballot drop box is available on the MLK Medical Campus at 12012 Compton Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90059 (near the corner of 120th and Compton)

gave us the perfect opportunity to celebrate the incredible people who keep our health system going every day.

From the talent show to massages, gifts, snacks, a Habit Burger truck, a dessert social, carnival fun and more, the week was filled with moments of joy and appreciation for our team.

Hospital Week may be over, but our gratitude continues all year long.

Big thanks to Anahiz Correa, Jessica Nunez and Jonathan Westall for representing MLKCH at EmPATH Summit 2026.

Our team led sessions exploring some of the most important issues in behavioral health care today, including everyday ethics, effective discharge planning for unhoused patients, safety and bias in behavioral health design, and the practical realities of building EmPATH units that meet guidelines while serving real patient needs.

EmPATH units offer a compassionate alternative for people experiencing a behavioral health crisis, and this summit was a national gathering of experts across health care, policy and design committed to advancing this model of care.

We’re grateful to our team for helping advance the conversation and for continuing to strengthen behavioral health care for South LA and beyond.

MLKCH is proud to share that our hospital has once again received it's sixth “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group for Spring 2026!

Coming on the heels of our Straight-A hospital designation, this recognition reflects the high standards our team upholds every day to keep patients safe and deliver high-quality care.

Congratultions to everyone involved in this effort and a special shoutout to Peter Koutros, our Director of Quality, for helping lead the systems, standards and everyday practices that make recognitions like this possible

Nurses Week was a blast at MLKCH!

From donuts and coffee to tea with our Chief Nursing Officer, the week was filled with moments to pause and connect. We honored excellence through our DAISY Award ceremony, including a special video message from Bonnie Barnes, co-founder of The DAISY Foundation, and ended the week with a wellness carnival complete with art, fun and even a dunk tank.

To our nurses: thank you for your skill, compassion, leadership and heart. We are grateful for all you do. Happy Nurses Week!
