Too often Yoga is practiced as a physical exercise and while it is good for the physical body, it is meant for the mind. But no matter how you practice Yoga, remember to meet yourself where you are in that particular moment in a loving and compassionate way.

“Consistency” is a word I don’t feel deeply connected to. Having ADHD it would seem like consistency, such as a consistent routine and ways to keep on track throughout my day would be highly beneficial. But it sounds both boring and like work. Somehow this evening the word came up in my mind after teaching Mat Pilates. The current trend is for Mat Pilates to be fast, strenuous, and hot. Ugh! When people come to my class I tell them I teach from a mindful, slowed down approach. In almost every class someone comments how the current exercise doesn’t feel like much, but they know they are going to feel it later.
That’s the thing about consistency; it’s not about going fast and hard nor achieving something quickly. It’s about the slow, steady, boring moments when you want things to move
faster or for change to happen sooner. That’s not always how life works.
Now I realize how being consistent about practicing nervous system regulation has really changed me over the years. A few people have recently told me how I am “zen” and “calm” which I don’t think I am all that much. Except, in the ways I need to be calm. I have worked hard to regulate my nervous system and pull myself out of feeling constantly stressed and overwhelmed, but only by consistently working on being calm through practice.
“Consistency is a word I don’t feel deeply connected to”, but by consistently practicing mindfulness and nervous system regulation, I changed my life. ❤️

Well, I’ve really been slacking on creating routines for classes especially Mat Pilates. It’s time to get serious. What a beautiful night to workout with the alarming sounds of locusts? 🤣

Last Saturday while in Colorado, my family and I completed the Manitou Incline. If you’re not familiar, it’s .88 of a mile at a 45 degree incline with a total of 2,768 steps. Before starting, I didn’t make a goal to complete the climb but decided to break the climb into sections. That’s easier said than done as my heart was pounding almost immediately. I quickly realized the only way to complete the incline was to take my sweet time, stop in shady spots to catch my breath and slow my heart rate, and of course drink water and eat snacks.
There are also markers for every 100 steps completed which is helpful. Oh and sometimes I had to bear crawl my way up as my legs grew tired and the steep incline forced me to sway backwards while standing upright.
When I saw the last 20-30 steps were in front of me (and some random man yelled down “Let’s go mommy!” 🤣 My daughter later told me that she had told people at the top “That’s my mom.” 🥰) I felt energized and quickly finished those last steps to the top. After an hour and 20 minutes, I felt a sense of accomplishment; a challenge only completed because I decided to take my time and pause when needed. I did not allow my ego to control the situation in one way or the other.

This past week my family and I took a trip to Colorado. We spent several afternoons at St. Marys Glacier near Idaho Springs, CO. It was one of the most beautiful places I’ve been to which made me have to sit and take it all in. What came to me, while “taking it all in”, is that this is what life is all about - slowing down, connecting with the land and your loved ones, and appreciating the beauty of life; things we take for granted.
Tonight while reading Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer, I felt very connected to this statement “A teacher comes, they say, when you are ready. And if you ignore its presence, it will speak to you more loudly. But you have to be quiet to hear.”
