Today I taught two groups of campers at the Everheart Hospice Bereavement Camp, Camp Encourage. This is the third year I’ve been asked to teach Yoga to the campers. I love being able to help these youth learn about self-care through movement and breath-work.
Everyone is welcome to choose whether or not they’d like to participate. Some choose to lie down on the mat for most of the session but are still engaging in the movements and breathing practices in their own way, which is awesome; they are listening to and honoring what they need in the moment.
In one of the groups a younger boy sat down on the mat next to me, when he realized what we were doing (Yoga) he perked up and spent much of the class excitedly telling me about the kids Yoga practices he enjoys. It was sweet.
I’m so happy and grateful to work with these kids and show them the importance of and how to care for and comfort one’s self. I’m also very grateful to be part of this program.

The website is a great way to easily find current class schedules and message me to schedule private sessions, group classes, and events.

(Reshare from Lifelong Yoga)
I do find this to be true if the movement focuses on slow, controlled poses. Often times group classes move rather quickly and aren’t as adaptable when the pace is more flow oriented or synced with music.

This is why I enjoy working with individuals and groups who do want to take things slowly, unwind, and learn ways to adapt to support their own body.

Most often Yoga is advertised as something of a performance art for the graceful, athletic body. Those images completely miss the point. Yoga is meant to be experienced within by all body shapes and sizes. It’s a practice meant to connect us to the present moment - get out of your head, into your body, and regulate your nervous system.

Think yoga teachers have a lot of training and knowledge about trauma? We do not. At least I do not and most will not if they have not done training beyond the 200 HR Yoga Teacher Training where topics are determined by Yoga Alliance which does not even regulate the industry. (The yoga industry in the U.S. is not regulated.)

Here’s a rundown of pretty much everything I learned in 200 hours of Yoga Teacher Training:

200 Hr YTT covers many topics and not really in depth.
There was a lot of emphasis on sequencing classes and practicing different types of yoga (chakra, vinyasa, ashtanga - explored different lineages). Let’s face it, that is primarily what our culture practices in terms of a yoga class/practice AND we must keep people safe. After that there was a decent amount of focus on breathing practices (which led in to much discussion on the nervous system and nervous system regulation).

We covered different types of meditation (which led to covering the anatomy of the brain and brain waves during meditation) , and a lot of emphasis on the names of yoga poses in Sanskrit (which I quickly stopped using as I have zero education about the culture in which Sanskrit originated. Plus, I also learned the words don’t always translate how we use them.)

We also discussed: the basics of the business, surface level info. on chakras, very little discussion on yoga philosophy, famous yoga teachers and their teaching lineages, a little bit of anatomy, the topic of trauma was discussed more than some of the other forementioned topics but mostly in reference to popular books and theories on trauma and helping people feel safe in class - being mindful on the use of yoga straps, not having students’ backs to the entryway, and being cautious of wording.

I studied many hours on my own but mostly yoga poses and alignment.

Also there’s just so much that could be covered, but 200 hours spaced out over 10-12 months (and sometimes less than that) goes by so quickly.

That said, the learning really never ends and it’s up to the individual teacher to learn what they feel is most important. I completely enjoyed every single moment of my 200 HR YTT experience, grew as a person during that time, met amazing people, gained better confidence, and began a journey I never imagined being on and am grateful for. 🙏
