FEMM (Fertility Education + Medical Management) is a knowledge- and science-based reproductive health program for women, which teaches them to identify, track, and comprehend changes in their body that are relevant to their health and fertility. Women are guided to notice important, specific biological signs—i.e., menstruation and ovulation—and understand both why these signs occur and what they mean for their general and sexual health. Women can use these personal observations to more fully understand their body, knowledgeably partner with medical professionals in identifying health problems and solutions, address any irregularities and underlying problems, and make decisions about the timing of their pregnancies. Dr. Karen Poehailos presented Tracking and Treatment with FEMM, at a recent medical conference sponsored by Duquesne University. The research shows that FEMM is ahead of the curve with its patient protocols (it takes on average seven year for a woman to receive to diagnosis and treatment!) FEMM research and protocols are changing the standard of care for women and we are seeing powerful changes for women’s improved mental and physical health. (For the record: we’ve been talking about metabolic phenotypes long before PCOS was renamed PMOS… 😎)

Mara and her husband had done everything they were told. They changed their diets. They took supplements. They lost weight. They had done rounds of bloodwork. Physical exams.

There’s a reason the students at Romero Academy in Ohio LOVE their Nurse Emily! As a nurse, a certified FEMM teacher and the teenFEMM co-teacher in the classroom, she helped girls in Grade 6-8 feel more at home in their bodies through the teenFEMM health curriculum.

It’s been a minute and school IS out for summer! Still, we couldn’t resist sharing this sweet pic of two nurses from the Franciscan Health network who visited a Grade 8 class to teach them teenFEMM! 💪

The girls loved it and had loads of questions about this one friend who has things like bad period pain, acne, anxiety, or no clear signs to chart … and everyone wanted to know whether that was normal and healthy?

The good news is that everyone - and you can tell your friend, too - can see a FEMM doctor through telehealth and get the treatment and care their growing brain and body deserves! Puberty is a really important time of development and FEMM providers can help you feel your best - physically and emotionally.

The first FEMM Medical Management training in Nigeria is now in the books! These doctors couldn’t have been more inspiring, as we heard about their work on the front lines, treating the poorest and most vulnerable in communities across Nigeria.

We knew we needed to get them FEMM - as no person should go without the best in reproductive healthcare, regardless of conflict or circumstance. It wasn’t easy getting there, given the situation, but after multiple visa attempts and delays… we made it.

The Reproductive Health Research Institute (RHRI) led the training, along with our FEMM medical team from the Weil Bugando Medical Center in Tanzania.

It was a privilege to work with these dedicated and caring providers, as we poured over the research and FEMM treatment protocols together this past week, learning about their patients’ unmet need for reproductive health education and treatment.

Don’t they look dapper in their newly minted FEMM lab coats?! Welcome to the FEMM family - and thank you for traveling to the remotest regions to tirelessly care for the people in your communities.
