We don’t have to dive that far into Yoga philosophy to find the concept of Ahimsa; non-harming or non-violence. Many modern yoga schools teach methods that are disempowering, activating and even harmful for anyone ….but especially women, gender expansive people, black, brown and indigenous people, those who have immigrated here, people with substance use disorder, formally incarcerated individuals, people with eating disorders, and abuse and SA survivors… what do all these groups have in common? Histories of trauma. In order to teach trauma informed Yoga ….we don’t just need to learn…we need to unlearn. We need nervous system informed practices and decolonization- to go back to the healing roots of Yoga.
