Cancer Center Chaplain's Corner: This past Friday, Lisa, one of the receptionists at the Information Desk in the Cancer Center, retired. In addition, Pat, who worked in Spiritual Care at both Community and the downtown hospitals for the past 11 years, also retired.
I had a chance to spend time with each of them before they left and listened as they reflected on their many years here at Upstate. While they both look forward to retirement and a slower-paced, more relaxed life, Lisa and Pat spoke about what they will miss and what makes leaving difficult… leaving people behind.
You can imagine that they were speaking about their co-workers… they were. Significant and meaningful relationships have been formed over the course of many years, and there’s a sadness when goodbyes are said.
But they also spoke of relationships they have shared with you – patients and family members that come to the Cancer Center downtown and the two Upstate hospitals. They talked about you being a blessing to them, and they have been privileged to share in your journey. Their hope is that in some small way, accompanying you has made this time easier for you and your loved ones to bear. You have touched Lisa and Pat in profound ways.
They also want you to know that you are not being left behind. They said you will continue to be held in their hearts, minds, and spirits. Lisa and Pat will be lifting you up in prayer.
And so, together, let us wish them both all the best as the next chapter in their lives begins to unfold.
