A reminder to athletes everywhere as Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close: who you are has always mattered beyond what you produce, achieve, or perform.

I’ve spent years inside athletics from multiple perspectives, both on the athlete side and the coaching side, and one thing that continues to stand out is how difficult life after sport can be for many athletes, even the ones who seem the most disciplined, successful, or steady on the outside.

A lot of athletes are taught how to compete, push through, and stay focused under pressure.

What often gets left out is how to navigate everything that comes after. The loss of structure. The identity shifts. The emotional weight that can surface once the game, season, or career ends.

For some athletes, that transition feels relieving. For others, it can feel disorienting, isolating, or heavier than they expected.

And many carry it quietly because they’ve spent years being rewarded for staying strong and keeping things moving.

This conversation deserves more honesty, more support, and a lot more understanding than it currently gets.

Sometimes the spaces we needed as athletes become the spaces we create for others later.

A lot of leaders spend so much time being responsive to everyone else that they lose touch with what’s happening internally for themselves.

Not in dramatic ways all at once, but gradually.

Difficulty slowing down. Irritability that feels unlike them. Constant mental noise. Feeling physically present somewhere while mentally still carrying work, responsibility, and unfinished decisions.

After a while, that state can become so familiar that it stops feeling noticeable.

That’s part of why I believe leadership support has to make room for the psychological and emotional side of carrying responsibility, not just the operational side of leading people.

And when you’re ready to have those conversations in a more intentional way, consultation and support are available.

One of the most important parts of this summit was creating a space where athletes and young people could talk honestly about what they’re carrying mentally and emotionally without judgment.

Conversations like these matter because so many athletes are navigating pressure, expectations, and emotions they were never fully taught how to understand.

If you were at the summit, what was one takeaway that stayed with you afterward?

Agility Counseling Group works with athletes and people in high-pressure roles who are already used to performing at a high level. This is the work our legacy is built on.

What tends to get overlooked is everything that sits alongside that.

Not the visible part of performance, but what builds over time. The pressure that doesn’t really turn off. The moments where confidence shifts. Or when something like an injury or transition changes how everything feels.

That’s where our work comes in.

We provide licensed, clinical mental health support, applied to environments where people are expected to keep showing up and performing.

Alongside that, we work with coaches, parents, teams, and organizations. The focus there is on how people are supported and how those environments are shaped over time.

If you’re getting familiar with our work or want to understand it more, you can learn more or schedule an appointment.
