💮 We began Term 4 at our Monday & Thursdays tween Art Club with finding & sketching mandalas & fractals in nature 💮

💚 Think spider webs, succulents, snails, flowers, water ripples & tree rings. We then used our tree ring prints to create from the centre of our artworks using nature symbols for inspiration 💚

Creating outside, sketching in week 1 & using posca week 2, we tuned into our senses, noticing the birdsong, the temp, the breeze, the colours, the smells the calming atmosphere. We then focused on endless pattern & repetition, to soothe & expand the mind.

🌱 Teaching my tweens an art activity that they can take with them for life when feeling anxious or overwhelmed, best created outside in nature 🌱

oh fascinating that they mimic our veins & carry vital life force & nutrients too! We are not separate to nature, we are nature 🫶🏼

Have you driven down Main Road Blackwood yet to see the installation of Nature Creative Art Club kids Stobie pole murals? They look absolutely sensational 🤩

Here’s our Tween Stobie pole (aged 12-14) located at Tyres & More, 163 Main Road, Blackwood 🙌 so proud ⭐️

🌲 There is a house near the studio that has cut down a lot of trees. The lovely land owners informed me, “These trees aren’t natives - they’re considered pests as they take over & invade everything”. Pesky things.

I couldn’t help but ponder on this because well, unless we are a traditional custodian of these lands, then so are we! An uncomfortable, truth. Our neighbours have replaced the invasive species with more natives now 💚

They kindly donated some clean cut logs for my Art Club Kids to experiment with & our next print making Art Class emerged!

We began with a discussion & hunt for mandalas & fractals in nature. The kids loved that you could see the rings that represent growth. Tree growth rings are the concentric circles visible in the cross-section of a tree trunk. Each ring represents one year of growth, making them a natural timeline of the tree’s life and the environmental conditions it survived.

The scientific study of these rings is called dendrochronology.
• Wide Rings: Indicate favourable growing conditions with plenty of rainfall, mild temperatures, and ample sunlight.
• Narrow Rings: Signal environmental stress, such as severe droughts, prolonged cold periods, or intense competition from surrounding trees.
• Eccentric or Uneven Rings: Often show up if a tree was leaning or growing on a steep slope, causing it to produce reaction wood on one side to stabilize itself.
• Scars and Marks: Dark patches, charcoal layers, or abrupt structural interruptions record specific historical events like forest fires, insect infestations, frost damage, or physical injuries.

Fascinating! Our conditions contribute to our growth & scars in the same way. Because we are not separate to nature, we are nature, weeds & all 💚🌲🫶🏼

What comes next with these art works is truly magical 💮✨

🖤💛❤️ Nature Creative acknowledges the Kaurna people as the traditional custodians of the Adelaide Plains, as we create art on land known as Piradli (Belair National Park), respecting their spiritual relationship with country, always 💚

🌱🌸 Nature Creative’s school holiday art session @ Carrick Hill for Nature Festival began with a playful & mindful seed visualisation & I want to share it with you 🙌

Created as the Nature Festival theme this year was seeds, but also, because as a Creative Arts Therapist, I understand the importance of connecting children aged 5-10yo to nature & themselves via movement & their senses, using playful imagination.
It was a such a lovely way to begin & paved the way for a grounded & memorable 90min art making session.

The children imagined themselves as seeds that turned into pink roses, lavender, orange mangos, yellow lemons & even pistachios! Enduring all weather as they grow, before finding their art inspiration in the magical gardens of Carrick Hill 🌱🌸

Here it is…
Perhaps you could try it with your little artist?

YOU ARE A SEED
Find a comfortable place to sit. Rest your hands in your lap, soften your shoulders and let your body become still.

Take a slow breath in through your nose. Feel your belly gently grow. Now breathe out slowly and feel your body relax. Let’s do that two more times.

If you feel comfortable, close your eyes. Imagine you are a tiny seed resting deep in the earth. The dark soil around you feels soft, warm and safe.

You are quiet and still, but something wonderful is happening inside you. You have everything you need to begin growing.
Imagine small roots growing down from your seed. They stretch deeper and wider into the soil, making you feel strong and steady. The roots drink fresh water from the earth.

A gentle rain falls above you. Drop by drop, the water travels through the soil to your roots. With every breath, you feel ready to grow.
Slowly lift one hand like a tiny green shoot pushing through the soil. Then lift your other hand. Reach both arms up towards the warm, bright sun.

Slowly stand up, go onto your knees or reach further as your stem grows taller. Take your time. Imagine you are becoming any plant, tree or flower you choose.

Stretch your arms out like leaves and open your fingers wide. Feel the sunshine on your leaves. Imagine colourful petals opening, one by one.

What kind of plant have you become? Notice your colours, your shape and your size. Perhaps a butterfly, bee or little bird comes to visit you.

A soft breeze begins to blow. Sway gently from side to side, but keep your legs planted like strong roots. The wind grows a little stronger, and still your roots hold you safely.
Now the breeze becomes soft again. Feel yourself moving slowly, calmly and gently. You can bend without breaking because you are flexible and strong.

Let the air become quiet. Stand tall and still. Take another slow breath in, then gently breathe out. Feel the ground beneath your feet.
When you are ready, open your eyes. Remember that, like a plant, you can keep learning and growing. No matter the weather, you are strong, flexible and connected to the natural world around you.

Now…
Let’s spend 30 minutes looking closely at plants and flowers. Lets try to find a seed that has just sprouted! Notice the colours, shapes, lines, leaves and petals. Draw what you see. Your drawings do not need to be perfect—just look carefully and include the details you notice. Remember, every plant begins as a tiny seed!

Nature Creative partnered again these school holidays with Carrick Hill for this year’s Nature Festival With a delightful spring theme to bring awareness to newly sprouted flora by creating these incredibly beautiful greeting cards 💚🌱

🌱💚 Nature Journaling using Botanical Drawing is at its best in Spring, as flower bulbs awaken to amaze us with their magnificent beauty! Slowing down to deeply notice & appreciate the beautiful world around us is the ultimate way to engage our senses & be in the present moment.

This session began with a mindful & playful seed sprouting visualisation to enhance this year’s Nature Festival theme of seeds. We then used sketching techniques, fine point pens, watercolours & graphic markers to create 4 artwork greeting cards 💚🌱

It was such a pleasure to meet so many wonderful new artists at this sold out event & to spend a day creating in the beautiful sunny gardens. Thank you to all that attended & to magnificent Carrick Hill for having me again, I am always in my element creating in nature with you 🙏🌸

On the 29th of August we were honoured to welcome our local MP, Catherine Hutchesson MP to the Nature Creative Art Studios to launch the completion of our Stobie Pole panel project & meet our fabulous little artists aged 6-14yo.

Half of Nature Creative’s artist community & families attended & we had around 80 people visit to see our fabulous finished project!

I’m thrilled to announce that our Stobie Poles are now up & installed along Main Road, Blackwood, between Blackwood Hire & the Belair Hotel where they will remain for years to come - how special!

Congratulations to our talented artists! Thank you so much to Blackwood Action Group & our teaching assistant Tilly for making this happen & to Catherine for visiting to celebrate this wonderful project with us 💚🙏

🌱💚 The children at Nature Creative found the Stobie pole project exciting, meaningful and deeply connected to their own neighbourhood.
They enjoyed thinking about the animals, plants, colours, places and moments that make the Blackwood area special, then turning those ideas into bold mural designs for the community to enjoy.
Through the process, they discovered how individual drawings could come together as part of a shared story, and they showed imagination, teamwork, care and dedication as they helped bring the Stobie pole panels to life 💚🌱
