Meet Joanna – Provisional Psychologist at Guiding Light Psychology

Joanna’s journey into psychology was shaped by her own experiences as a teenager, where receiving support through therapy inspired her to one day help others through difficult times as well.

Here is what Joanna wants you to know before starting therapy:
* There is no “one-size-fits-all” approach to therapy
* You are allowed to take things at your own pace
* Therapy should feel collaborative and flexible
* Your story, experiences, and goals matter

Joanna describes her therapy approach as client-led and collaborative. She often explains therapy like being in a car together, with the client holding the steering wheel while she helps guide and support the journey. She believes flexibility, choice, and a sense of control can be incredibly healing.

Joanna’s path to psychology was not linear. Before entering the field, she studied fashion design, worked in makeup and special effects, and spent five years living in Japan working in marketing and social media. She believes these life experiences helped shape her understanding of people and human behaviour.

Outside of the therapy room, Joanna enjoys expressing her creativity through art and fashion, and loves staying active through Pilates, yoga, and weight training.

If resting makes you feel guilty, that usually means you were taught that your value comes from what you produce, not who you are.

So when you rest or slow down, your nervous system reacts negatively.

• Rest can trigger guilt because it feels unfamiliar, not because it’s wrong
• Many people were conditioned to associate slowing down with criticism or failure
• Your nervous system may interpret rest as unsafe if you’ve lived in constant pressure
• Rest is how your mind and body regulate, recover, and reset
• Without rest, discipline turns into burnout, not growth

You don’t need to earn rest. You need it to function properly.
