Building Independence Through Everyday Moments
Emma was supported by her Support Worker, Loz, to head to Aldi to purchase low-carb bread so she could prepare a healthy lunch. π₯ͺπ
While this may seem like a simple trip to the shops and making lunch, these everyday activities are important opportunities for Emma to build practical life skills and greater independence.
With support from Loz, Emma was able to practise:
π Developing her food preparation skills, budgeting and planning
π Building confidence in completing tasks independently
𧑠Taking greater ownership of her everyday routines
One of Emmaβs goals is: βI would like to increase my independence skills and become more capable in everyday living, such as money handling, domestic activities, social and community participation.β
At Activated Concepts, we believe support should be about doing with, not doing for. Our role is to provide the right level of prompting, encouragement and guidance so participants can develop skills, build confidence and work towards greater independence in their everyday lives.
For Emma, making her own lunch is more than preparing a meal, it is another step towards achieving her personal goals and building the skills she needs to live the life she chooses.
π Well done, Emma, and thank you to Loz for creating a meaningful capacity-building opportunity through an everyday activity!
