🎵 Why do Music Therapists use visuals?
Sometimes, the most powerful tool in a music therapy session isn’t an instrument it’s a visual support.

In these photos, our Director and RMT Rachael is using a Music Control Chart with Baxter to explore three important musical concepts:
🎹 Volume
🗣️ Voice Control
🥁 Tempo (Speed)

While these are musical concepts, they’re also opportunities to develop skills that extend far beyond the therapy room.

Visual supports provide clients with a concrete way to understand abstract concepts. Rather than simply asking a client to “play softer” or “slow down,” the visual offers a clear, predictable, and consistent reference that supports learning in a way that is meaningful and accessible.

Through music, Baxter is practising:

🎵 Modulating the volume of his voice and instrument.
🎵 Adjusting his speed and pacing.
🎵 Listening, monitoring, and responding to feedback.
🎵 Developing self-awareness and self-regulation.
🎵 Building independence by making his own musical choices.

Music therapy provides a motivating environment where these skills can be explored naturally, with the music itself offering immediate feedback.

Visual supports reduce cognitive load, increase predictability, and empower clients to become active participants in their own learning.
As the sessions progress, these supports often become less necessary as confidence, understanding, and independence grow.

Because sometimes learning to play softer, slower, or steadier is also learning to recognise, adjust, and regulate ourselves.

Music becomes the medium, but the outcomes reach far beyond the music.

Progress begins with trust, and trust makes courage possible.

Standing at a microphone can look simple from the outside.
But moments like this represent safety, preparation, and weeks of supported growth.

Performance in music therapy is not about perfection, it’s about expression, confidence, and self-belief.

This is what happens when a client feels safe enough to share.

Every word spoken is a win. 🎵✨
