🕊️🙏🏾❤️💛💚🙏🏾Celebrating the Life and Legacy of a Truly Special Friend — Reverend Barry Carter MBE ❤️🕊️

There are truly special people in this world, and the sooner we recognise the love, kindness and goodness they bring, the sooner we can come together to make this world a better place.

It is with deep sadness, but also with immense gratitude, that we receive the news of the passing of a very special person to me, Reverend Barry Carter MBE.

Reverend Carter gave an incredible 34 remarkable years of service to St Andrew’s Brockley, from 1975 until his retirement in 2009. His life was one of dedication, compassion and service. He was so much more than a pastor — he was a friend, mentor, father figure and pillar of strength to so many.

Through the community centre, he guided generations of young people, helping steer them away from trouble and towards brighter futures. He stood beside families during their most difficult moments and remained a source of comfort, hope and strength for our community.

He was also there for us following the heartbreaking tragedy of the New Cross Fire, when we lost so many dear friends and loved ones. In those darkest moments, Reverend Carter stood with the community, offering compassion, support and a shoulder to lean on.

His kindness, dedication and genuine love for Brockley touched countless lives. The seeds he planted through his work, his faith and his love will continue to grow through every generation he helped, supported and inspired.

Today, we mourn his passing, but we also celebrate his life, his service and his extraordinary legacy.

Reverend Carter, thank you from the depths of our hearts for your hard work, your dedication, your guidance and the love you gave so freely. Your contribution will never be forgotten. Your legacy will live on in all of us who were blessed to know you.

One gave His life for so many, and another gave so much of his life to serve so many. May we honour that example by continuing to love, support and uplift one another.

Rest in eternal peace in Zion, King. 👑🕊️
May the Most High welcome you home and may perpetual light shine upon you.

Forever in our hearts. 🫶🏽❤️🕊️

We, and many people in Brockley & beyond were sad to hear the news of the passing of Rev Barry
Carter MBE this week.
We knew Barry before we opened in 1996 as we'd lived in Brockley since 1975.
Barry's lovely wife Chris would often drive the minibus for trips with the nursery children, where Will attended as a child.
Barry blessed our Chapel when we opened in 1996 and would often pop in for a chat and cuppa. He conducted many, many funerals for our clients, with services in the church and at the cemeteries and crematoriums. We still hear now from clients how he had baptised, married and buried various members of the same family.
He would drop his fee if he knew that the family faced hardship, and gave every funeral and family the attention and care they deserved. He often brough a family in to us saying he knew he was being cheeky, but could we help them out with funeral costs as they didn't have much money.
He was always approachable, friendly, kind, compassionate and frequently funny.
He would confront poor behaviour in the youth club, seeking to get to the source of issues rather than punishing, and was loved by the thousands of young people who attended.
The older people who attended the lunch clubs respected him and in return he gave them a place of friendship, kindness and companionship.
Even though Barry retired in 2009 and Rev John Grundy now looks after the parish with the same care and attitude, St Andrew's will always be known as 'Barry's Church'.
Barry loved his parishioners, the church and above all his family.
Our best wishes and condolences go out to his wife Chris, his family, friends and all who knew him.

30 years.
Never in our wildest dreams did we think we'd still be here.
Changing offices, owners, staff, cars and everything else that goes with running a business.
We've made friends, lost friends and got enough stories to write a book, but we can save that for the retirement!
30 years may not seem long compared to some other funeral directors, but it's certainly longer than some.
Hard work, dedication, long days and nights are all part and parcel of our job.
We can't thank each and every person, celebrant, manufacturer, or company who have been there along the way, but if you've helped us to help our clients, then all we can say is thank you.
A huge thank you must go to our staff, past and present. Without them, there is no Dunphys.
Finally, thank you to every single family that choose us to arrange a funeral. It's our job to make sure we get it right for you. Your trust in us to give you the very best service we can, which we strive every day to improve.

Here's to the next 30!
