What can health care learn from aviation and defence, two industries where safety is also non-negotiable?

In a new op-ed in Healthy Debate, NYG’s Patricia Trbovich, PhD and Badeau Family Research Chair in Patient Safety and Quality Improvement, and Dr. Rolf Gronas, Anesthesiologist, argue that safer care depends on more than education and training. To consistently prevent errors, we need systems designed to support health care providers in doing the best thing, every time.

Because it’s those everyday obstacles, from cluttered workspaces to unclear processes and responsibilities, that can increase the risk of mistakes.

🚨 Heat Warning + Poor Air Quality Advisory 🚨

We're seeing an increase in patients visiting our Emergency Department with respiratory concerns as high temperatures and poor air quality from wildfire smoke continue to affect Toronto.

Take extra steps to protect your health:
✅ Keep indoor air cool and clean
✅ Limit strenuous outdoor activities
✅ Check the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) and consider wearing a well-fitted N95 if spending time outdoors
✅ Stay hydrated and take breaks in air-conditioned spaces
✅ Check in on family, friends and neighbours who may be more vulnerable

Some people are at greater risk from heat and poor air quality, including:
• People with heart or lung disease, asthma, COPD, diabetes, or other breathing conditions
• Seniors
• Children
• People working or exercising outdoors

If you experience worsening breathing difficulties, chest pain, or other serious symptoms, please seek medical attention.

? Ontario has now lowered the age to begin routine screening for colon cancer to age 45!

For most people this means checking your stool with a FIT kit every 2 years. These kits are at-home screening tools that can detect hidden blood in stool. That doesn’t mean cancer, but will require additional testing.

The kits are free and are ordered by your family doctor or nurse practitioner, or by calling 811 if without either.

Check out NYG’s very own Dr. Dani Manis unveiling the FIT kit! (note: the FIT packaging shown is for demonstration purposes only. Yours will look different).

FIT positive? Ask your family doctor or nurse practitioner to refer you to North York General for a follow-up colonoscopy. Learn why in our link in bio!
