Meet Oneal, an Instrument Aide at NYG, who is part of the team tasked with sterilizing, inspecting, and assembling medical instruments. Although they work behind-the-scenes, our Medical Devices Reprocessing (MDR) team is critical to the success and safety of all procedures at NYG.

But October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we want to shine light on the options available if you’ve had a mastectomy (removal of entire breast) or lumpectomy (removal of part of breast). New research co-authored by NYG’s Dr. Modupe Tunde-Byass (published in the .JAMC) looked at more than 1.4 million births across Canada and highlights the need for more equitable, culturally responsive care and better data to help improve outcomes for Black families.

In Canada’s Health Impact Report commissioned by NYG, researchers found that 70% of Canadians impacted by a serious illness or health crisis say they hide or minimize the toll it takes on them. For younger Canadians, that number rises to 85%!

The findings helped shape our Here for Life campaign, which recognizes that great care sees the whole person. It supports not only patients, but also family members, friends and caregivers who are part of their journey.

A health crisis can change daily life for an entire family — and much of that impact goes unseen.

Recently, North York General Hospital leaders Seanna Millar and Dr. Everton Gooden joined CP24 Toronto's Breaking News to discuss compassionate care and Canada’s Health Impact Report, a national study commissioned by NYG. Among those affected by a serious illness or health crisis, 70 per cent said they hid or minimized the toll it took on them.

We asked our own social media community: Have you or a loved one ever faced a health crisis? 94 per cent of respondents said yes. Of those, 93 per cent said they hid or downplayed how it affected their day-to-day lives.

These personal experiences reflect why the compassionate care that our hospital is known for matters.

Our new creative, appearing now across the city, brings our Here for Life brand to life by highlighting how NYG sees the whole person — and the loved ones carrying the experience alongside them.

Through our $500-million Here for Life Campaign, we’re raising funds to expand care spaces, equip our teams with critical tools and technology, and advance research and innovation — with compassionate care remaining at the heart of everything we do.
