Welcome to the PhysioPod® UK network, Orla Gallagher!

We are thrilled to introduce Orla Gallagher of Helios Clinic, a registered general nurse (RGN) and a tissue viability nurse (TVN) with a highly specialised clinical background. Orla, the founder of Helios Clinic in Clonakilty, Co. Cork, is dedicated to providing evidence-based, personalised care.

Orla brings a wealth of expertise to her practice, holding a postgraduate certificate in tissue viability and wound management, as well as postgraduate diplomas in intensive care and gerontology. Her comprehensive, patient-centred services include:

Lymphoedema and Oedema Management: As a certified lymphoedema therapist trained in the Casley-Smith method, Orla provides complete decongestive therapy (CDT), including clinical manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), compression therapy, and self-management education.

Specialist Scar Therapy: Highly accredited by the UK Restore Scar Therapy School and certified by The Aftercare Academy, Orla uses advanced massage and fascia-release techniques to treat C-section scars, joint replacement scars, trauma scars, and more.

Advanced Wound Care: She expertly manages complex surgical wounds, chronic wounds, and leg ulcers.

DEEP OSCILLATION®: Orla utilises this clinically proven, gentle, and non-invasive electrostatic field therapy to permeate tissues to a depth of 8 cm, enhancing the body's natural healing process.

Committed to accessibility and patient safety, Orla offers evening clinic appointments and mobile home visits in the local area for elderly or housebound patients, and she is fully Garda-vetted. Demonstrating her dedication to continuous professional development, she is also advancing her clinical skill set by studying breast cancer rehabilitation with Klose Training.

Good Morning,

First, we want to express our heartfelt thanks. When Julie and I launched this independent, company-led, service evaluation in October, we hoped to capture a snapshot of UK Head & Neck Lymphoedema (HNL) care because we knew from years of feedback that many patients felt abandoned after head and neck cancer treatment.

What we received was far more profound. We were humbled by the 84 of you who trusted us with your stories—sharing not just clinical data, but the raw reality faced every day by patients and practitioners.

This project was a collective effort and we extend our deepest gratitude to the lymphoedema community partners who helped us reach the community:

• HLP Therapy
• Restore Scar Therapy
• L-W-O Community
• Lymphoedema Network Wales
• Lymphoedema Support Network (LSN)
• Lymphoedema Training Academy
• Lymphoedema United
• MLDUK
• The Mouth Cancer Foundation

From Grassroots to "Strong Signals":

Importantly, our survey was anonymous. This empowered patients to share raw accounts and allowed NHS clinicians to speak candidly about "capacity crises."

Mr Neil Shah, Consultant Surgeon, describes these findings as "strong signals" of unmet need. We are thrilled to announce that Mr Shah—a specialist surgeon and himself a survivor of Stage 3 mouth cancer—will now lead a formal Phase 2 Research Initiative, bringing a unique "dual lens" of clinical authority and lived experience to the fight.

Access the Findings: We have uploaded the full findings to an interactive digital page where you can read, listen to, or download the data:

https://www.physiopod.co.uk/phase-1-analysis-uk-treatments-and-experiences-of-head-and-neck-lymphoedema-hnl-survey-results.shtml

Julie and I are determined to keep fighting until everyone with HNL, no matter where they live, can "live well" and have access to the treatments they need and deserve.

WORLD LYMPHOEDEMA DAY IS TODAY, MARCH 6TH.

FABULOUS NEWS!

Celebrated photographer and author Gemma Levine FRSA has been crowned "Charitable Champion 2026" at the prestigious Mayfair Times Community Awards. Living with lymphoedema for over 15 years, the wonderful Gemma's tireless advocacy as a voluntary ambassador for St George’s Hospital Charity recently inspired a historic £4.8 million donation to fund pioneering advances in lymphoedema research and care.

Continuing her incredible advocacy, Gemma is currently working on Swollen Silence, the first-ever documentary about lymphoedema. The highly anticipated film will feature Dame Judi Dench and Dame Joanna Lumley and is set to premiere this summer. The documentary aims to raise awareness about the condition and the challenges faced by those living with it. By shedding light on personal stories and expert insights, Gemma hopes to inspire greater understanding and support for lymphoedema patients.

This incredible milestone arrives at a fitting time, as the globe unites today, March 6th, to mark the 11th annual World Lymphoedema Day. Established in 2016 by the Lymphatic Education & Research Network (LE&RN), this advocate-driven movement aims to educate the world about lymphatic diseases and make a painful, lifelong, and often "invisible" condition visible.

Lymphoedema is chronic swelling caused by a failure or overload of the lymphatic system, which can carry a heavy emotional, physical, and financial toll for those affected. To commemorate the day, organisations worldwide are amplifying patient stories and advocating for early diagnosis and compassionate care.

Celebrating 10 Years Cancer-Free and an Incredible New Book!

Today marks a monumental milestone for the amazing Karen Liesching-Schroder—10 years since her life-changing tongue cancer surgery. She has truly used her second chance at life to become a beacon of hope, light, positivity, and perseverance for so many.

In her vital role as a Public Speaker and Mouth Cancer Foundation Patient Liaison Officer, Karen helps countless people on a daily basis. Julie and I are immensely grateful to have found her, and it brings us such peace of mind knowing we can signpost with confidence to her private Facebook community for anyone needing a safe space and support.

We are absolutely thrilled to promote her inspiring new book, "My Silver Linings: A Memoir to Head and Neck Cancer and Late Effects with Friends". True to Karen's wonderful nature, her memoir "oozes with silver linings and positivity". Because she is such a huge advocate for public awareness and support networks, she went beyond her own journey to include the voices of other Head and Neck Cancer (H&NC) patients and the dedicated professionals who care for them.

If you know someone who is just starting out on this journey—whether they are preparing for surgery or navigating the early post-operative stages—please consider signposting them to this post, Karen's book, or her support community. A Head and Neck Cancer pathway can feel incredibly isolating, but seeing someone thriving and finding 'silver linings' 10 years post-surgery can offer an important beacon of hope. Karen specifically wrote this guide to help patients starting out know that they are never alone.

Let’s keep finding silver linings together!

Lymphoedema Awareness Week

We are so proud of the close relationship we share with our good friend Gaynor Leech, Expert Patient Advocate and Founder of the LWO Community. We work with Gaynor all the time, and her dedication to supporting those living with lymphoedema never ceases to inspire us!

As we approach World Lymphoedema Day on March 6th, we are thrilled to share Gaynor's latest article, which takes a fresh, deeply human look at a question we hear so often: What exactly is lymphoedema?.

Gaynor has skilfully simplified the topic, focusing not only on the physical swelling but also on the real lives, challenges, and strengths of those impacted by this often misunderstood condition. Her accessible guide offers a compassionate overview designed to empower both patients and professionals.

Lymphoedema Awareness Week

In her latest article, Jane Wigg of Lymphoedema Training Academy tackles "The Things We Don't Say" as part of an empowering new focus for Lymphoedema Awareness Week.

It’s time to break down the barriers in our clinics and talk openly about the "uncomfortable topics" that deeply affect the quality of life for those living with lymphoedema and lipoedema. These include often-silenced subjects like: hormones and menopause, Intimacy and sexual wellness, contraception, pregnancy, and physical changes post-surgery.

By collaborating with psychosexual therapists and women's health physios, the goal is to equip both clinicians and patients with the real words, resources, and confidence to have these important conversations.

Alongside this important campaign, Jane has announced the launch of two new courses driven by demand: Introduction to Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)—Foundation Course (an entry-level course for applying MLD to the healthy lymphatic system) and MLD for Post Surgery (co-led by Karen Cooper, covering everything from joint replacements and cancer surgeries to cosmetic procedures like liposuction).

Huge well done Jane, keep up the groundbreaking work, we salute you!!
