Dr. Michael Kim - Facial Plastic Surgery Choosing the right plastic surgeon for your facial aesthetic procedures is of great importance. Dr. Dr. Michael Kim is a proud native of the Pacific Northwest.

He grew up in Bellevue, Washington and earned his Bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology from Princeton University. He completed his medical education at the University of Washington and subsequently moved to Baltimore, Maryland where he did his internship in Surgery and residency in Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery at Johns Hopkins University. Further subspecialty training in Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, and Oculoplastic Surgery was completed at OHSU. Dr. Kim then joined the faculty of Mayo Clinic Arizona's department of Otolaryngology. After two years of practice in the desert, Dr. Kim returned to the Northwest where he joined the Division of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at OHSU in 2011. In April of 2019, Dr. Kim founded drmichaelkim Facial Plastic Surgery in Northwest Portland in order to craft the best patient experience the Northwest has to offer. Dr. Kim's practice is highly specialized, focusing exclusively on plastic surgery of the face, head and neck. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery and the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. His areas of expertise include nasal surgery (aesthetic and functional septoplasty/rhinoplasty), facial rejuvenation (facelift, necklift, browlift), oculoplastic surgery (blepharoplasty, ptosis repairs), laser facial skin resurfacing, facial reconstruction following skin cancer surgery (Mohs reconstruction), scar revision, otoplasty (ear pinning), earlobe repair, benign and malignant skin lesion removal, and minimally invasive aesthetic procedures such as injectable fillers, and Botox/Dysport. We had the pleasure of welcoming Candice Dery, RDMS (Candice Dery RDMS - Aesthetic Imaging ), to our office yesterday for facial ultrasound training alongside Hayley Spoltman (Hayley ) and Tierney Triolo (The Artistry NP | Aesthetics & Wellness ✨ ).
Candice is a facial ultrasound specialist who travels nationwide teaching aesthetic providers how to visualize facial anatomy with ultrasound. This technology can improve the safety and precision of facial filler treatments, help providers manage filler-related complications, and—most importantly—help prevent them. It’s also incredibly cool since we got to scan each other’s faces and identify important structures under the guidance of Candice’s expert eye.
Although I no longer perform filler injections because my surgical practice keeps me fully occupied, I frequently see patients with overfilling or filler migration that can complicate surgery and prolong recovery. Ultrasound allows us to locate existing filler more precisely and dissolve it strategically, which can make the surgical and recovery process smoother.
I also occasionally hear from injectors seeking guidance with suspected vascular occlusions or other filler-related concerns. Building the skills and confidence to recognize and manage these complications is an important part of every injector’s ongoing education. The more providers who pursue advanced ultrasound training, the stronger and safer our aesthetic community becomes.

A little geometry—and a new chapter. 🇺🇸
Navy Uniform Regulations (NAVPERS 15665J, Article 2201.8) prohibit certain body modifications, including enlarged or stretched earlobe piercings.
For this handsome guy in his 20s, that meant having his earlobes repaired before he could enlist as planned.
But repairing stretched earlobes isn’t just a matter of closing a hole. Stretching creates extra skin, so restoring a natural shape becomes a geometry problem. Good thing I got an A in ninth-grade geometry! 📐
I used to do a lot of these repairs, but I have limited time for the smaller procedures these days. However, I still schedule them from time to time mostly because I’ve always enjoyed talking to these patients whose lives are usually a lot more interesting than mine! 🤓
His repair was done under local anesthesia. These photos show him just before the procedure and two weeks afterward. The dark areas and stitch marks should continue to fade as he heals.

As promised, here is another example of how we customize our facial rejuvenation strategy based on each patient’s anatomy and goals.
This patient in her mid-50s came in seeking a lower face and neck lift. She told me she had always had “zero chin definition,” a “double chin,” and “chipmunk cheeks,” even when she weighed 40 pounds less at 125 lbs in her 20s. She was hoping to improve the shape of her neck while reducing the excess skin and jowling that had developed over time.
We took her to the operating room for a Comprehensive deep plane face and necklift (temporal brow plus deep plane face and neck lift). During the deep plane lift, we also reduced her buccal fat from beneath the SMAS flap.
But the most transformative part of her procedure was the Deep Structural Necklift.
No amount of Kybella, liposuction, or energy-based treatments would have made a significant difference for her. Unfortunately, many patients spend considerable time and money on these treatments when the anatomy they’re trying to change can really only be addressed surgically. 🔪
Through a small incision under the chin, we were able to directly address the volume and shape of her neck with meticulous dissection beneath the platysma muscle. We reduced deeper fat pockets, portions of the digastric muscles, and conservatively trimmed the submandibular glands. The platysma is then brought back together, with a small strategic cut that helps create a defined neck angle where there really wasn’t one before. 📐
These maneuvers can create a powerful reduction in neck volume. When combined with lateral lifting of the platysma and face, we can create a neck and jawline that are more defined and “snatched” than ever.
For patients who simply weren’t blessed with ideal neck and jawline anatomy, this can be a game changer and can produce some of our most dramatic transformations.
I know, it’s a lot of information. But I’m trying to boil down about 17 years of surgical experience into one Instagram caption. 😂

This beautiful local patient in her 40’s first consulted with me four years ago about her facial aging concerns. She was looking for a surgical solution for mild laxity under her chin and along her jawline. At the time, I told her to “get lost”—in the nicest possible way 😂.
I didn’t think the benefit I could offer justified the risks of surgery. And quite frankly, I wasn’t there as a surgeon to offer her anything. Fast forward four years, and we had reached a sweet spot: her age-related changes had progressed, and my skills had evolved to help her achieve the result she wanted.
I performed an extended deep plane facelift through a lateral approach, with incisions only around her ears and no incision under her chin. Elevating and supporting the tissues from the sides can subtly improve the neck without directly operating on it.
The key, however, is patient selection. She has great bone structure and minimal volume under her chin, so she didn’t need deeper structural changes in her neck.
She’s pictured here seven months after surgery and is happy with her result.
I don’t know what to call this lift, but that’s probably because I’m not good at marketing or making up nonsensical names. Bridge City Lift? Nah. Just an approach customized for the right patient at the right time.

Two reasons to post for the same special person Jasmin !
Happy Surgical Technologist week to the best scrub in the land! So glad we could rescue (steal? 🤔) her from the clutches of the Death Star. And we also celebrated her birthday yesterday! She may only be in her 30’s but she is at least twice as mature as the surgeon in the practice. Then again that’s a low bar.
We also got to celebrate with an all-team dinner at the hottest spot in town THE MALARKEY . One lady there couldn’t stop staring and when Maria Morrison went to say 👋🏻, the woman was puzzled as to why so many beautiful women (and smart but how could she know?) were hanging out with the mid dude. I don’t know either! 🤷🏻‍♂️
Jazzy, thanks for being born and being such an integral part of the team. You make everyone’s day in the office better and easier. We appreciate you and know we couldn’t do it without you! To many more fun filled times in and out of the OR with you and the team. 💕

This lovely patient in her early 50s came to see us to discuss her upper eyelids.
She had always had hooded eyes, but over the past few years they had become increasingly heavy. Her eyelids were pushing down on her eyelashes, which bothered her appearance and made it more difficult to see by the end of the day.
She hoped to have her procedure as soon as possible because she was hosting a party for 75 people and wanted to be fully recovered in time. With shorter in-office procedures like this one, we can often accommodate a quicker turnaround. We got it done and missions accomplished. Her scars are imperceptible and this is due to a special suturing technique that I employ. It takes a little longer and is more technical, but the ends justify the means if it means the best possible outcome. 👀
She told me she found me through a local mom’s group, where apparently our name comes up quite a bit. Thank you to all those moms who continue to spread the good word! 💕

This beautiful Pacific Northwest patient in her late 40’s traveled to see me for facial rejuvenation after discovering my work through a Facebook group. As a healthcare professional herself, she had carefully researched her options and knew what she was looking for.
Her primary concerns were a sagging neckline and jawline, along with rejuvenation of her upper lip. She underwent a comprehensive deep plane face and neck lift and a modified upper lip lift, reducing her upper lip length from 13.5 mm by 3.5 mm.
She is pictured 7 weeks out from her surgery which is very early in the healing process. She has a lot more recovery still ahead, but she is already progressing beautifully. Her naturally youthful, babyfaced features are really shining through now!

Happy Friday, peeps!
This beautiful patient in her 60’s is just the sweetest. She came to see us wanting to address her brow and upper lids. She felt this area was heavy, and even after cataract surgery cleared up her vision, she felt like the overhanging tissue was still limiting her ability to see.
So about 4 months ago, we took her to the OR and performed a conservative temporal browlift with upper lid blepharoplasty. I think it struck the right balance — enhancing her appearance, restoring her field of vision, and still looking like her.
She was initially hesitant to share her photos online, but she loves her result so much she couldn’t help herself. We’re so glad she did.
