Understanding trauma means recognizing that it isn’t one-size-fits-all; it shapes our neurobiology and nervous system based on how and when it occurs. From a single overwhelming event to the chronic, ongoing layers of relational or developmental experiences, each type of trauma requires a nuanced, specialized approach to healing. Slide through to explore the distinct characteristics of these four categories and how they impact the path to processing and recovery ❤️‍🩹

Ever feel like you have to keep achieving to feel safe?

In psychology, overachieving is a common survival or coping response to past trauma. When external environments feel chaotic, or when love feels conditional, we often turn to perfectionism, productivity, and success to gain a sense of control and safety.

Recognizing this is the first step toward slowing down and separating your worth from your productivity.

Prolonged Exposure (PE) Therapy is an evidence-based approach designed to help individuals process traumatic memories. By gradually and safely approaching trauma-related memories and situations, PE works to reduce the ongoing power of these experiences and alleviate symptoms of PTSD.

Have you been told you’re “too sensitive”?
This month, we’re highlighting The Highly Sensitive Person by Dr. Elaine Aron. It explores a normal, inherited trait affecting 15–20% of people.

Being an HSP is not a mental health disorder. It just means your nervous system processes the world more deeply.

Common signs:
    •   Deeply processing information and emotions
    •    High empathy for others
    •    Strong awareness of your environment
    •    Feeling easily overwhelmed by chaotic settings

This book is a great tool for understanding overstimulation and embracing your strengths.

We’ve kind of been sold this idea that “rest” only happens when the lights are off, the phone is away, and we’re actively trying to snooze - which is true sometimes! However, standard sleep alone doesn’t actually make us feel rested.

True rest is so much deeper than just pausing your physical body; it’s about tending to your nervous system. It’s an active, intentional choice to soften.

Real rest can look like:
- Choosing joy: Doing something solely because it lights you up, with zero pressure to be productive or good at it.
- Practicing acceptance: Letting go of the urge to fix, change, or judge where you’re at right now.
- Being gentle: Changing the tone of your internal voice to one that’s kind, patient, and permissive.
- Somatic soothing: Knowing what actually calms your specific nervous system—whether that’s the weight of a heavy blanket, the warmth of a favorite meal, or the quiet rhythm of a slow walk outside.

Rest isn’t a reward you have to earn at the finish line of burnout. It’s the very foundation that keeps us grounded.

What does true rest look like for you today? 👇🏼
